Horatio Spafford wrote these words in 1873, after losing his four daughters when their ship sank in the Atlantic. Sailing past the spot where they died, he picked up a pen. Philip Bliss set it to music, and the hymn has steadied grieving hearts. Through a Christian lens, this song is revolution of the deepest kind: peace that doesn’t depend on circumstances. Spafford didn’t deny his sorrow; he declared that Christ was bigger than it. When the flesh collapses, the spirit can still say, it is well. That’s faith standing up.

“And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:7
