The Center for Executive Leadership sounds like a place where men in nice shoes talk about quarterly goals. To be fair, some of them do wear nice shoes. But since 2001, this Birmingham ministry, led by Richard E. Simmons III, has been about something deeper: helping men find their footing in Christ when life gets heavy.

They do it through Bible studies, counseling, free messages, books, and a year-long mentoring program for fathers and sons. But the work that stands out most is the one that gets the least applause: prison ministry.

Visiting men behind bars doesn’t come with a networking lunch. Nobody’s padding a résumé. It’s simply showing up for people the rest of the world has written off, which, if you read the Gospels, is exactly where Jesus kept showing up too.

I used to run digital media for The Center, so I’ve seen the heart behind it up close. It’s real. And it’s funded entirely by people who believe that no man is beyond reach.

“I was in prison, and ye came unto me.”

Matthew 25:36 (KJV)
