Every night, restaurants and grocery stores around Birmingham throw out perfectly good food. Grace Klein Community decided that was a problem worth solving.
Founded around 2010 by Jenny Waltman, Grace Klein started small, delivering food and building relationships. Today its food rescue program, FeedBHM, collects good food that would otherwise hit the dumpster and gets it to people who need it. In 2025 alone, they rescued over 3.7 million pounds of food across 47 Alabama counties, with an army of volunteers they call Food Rescue Heroes. No appointment needed, no hoops to jump through.
Their motto is simple: “We all have a need, we all have something to give.” I like that, because it doesn’t divide the world into helpers and the helped. Some weeks you’re carrying the groceries, and some weeks you’re the one who needs them.
“Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost.”
John 6:12 (KJV)
