In 1944, Jimmie Hale Mission started as a storefront chapel in downtown Birmingham. Eighty-some years later, it’s still doing what it set out to do: giving people who’ve hit bottom a way back up, and doing it for free.
Today the Mission runs shelters downtown, Jessie’s Place for women and children, and Royal Pines, a residential recovery center for men on 75 quiet acres in Hayden. Their recovery programs are Bible-based, and the goal isn’t just getting folks off the street. It’s helping them build a life worth staying in. Even their thrift stores pitch in to keep the doors open.
I’ve said it before: everybody needs recovery from something. Some of us just need it more visibly. Jimmie Hale Mission has spent eight decades treating those people like neighbors instead of problems, which is a pretty good working definition of loving your neighbor.
“He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock.”
Psalm 40:2 (KJV)
