Good Music. Good Works. To the Trinity and beyond.

Three words, repeated in worship: Holy, Holy, Holy. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Three persons, one God. And what is the thread running through our understanding of God? Love.

I’ve been thinking about the number four. Four Gospels. Four winds. Four corners of the earth. What if the fourth isn’t another person in the Trinity at all, but a picture of how divine love reaches outward into creation?

That’s not a new doctrine or a fourth member of the Godhead. It’s an image: a heart-knot, love drawing our attention to the unity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—and calling us to carry that love into the world.

Alvin Slaughter’s exuberant recording of “Holy, Holy, Holy,” from God Can!, gives that meditation a soundtrack. Worship isn’t only something we sing. It becomes Good Works when it teaches us to forgive, encourage, serve, and love our neighbors.

Four Gospels, one good news. Three persons, one God. And love is not merely a theory to admire. It’s something to live.

“And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.”

1 Corinthians 13:13 (KJV)
