Christians Are the True Progressives
What does real progress look like?
David Gornoski challenges us to consider this: Christians are the true progressives when they take the teachings of Jesus seriously.
Loving our enemies. Forgiving those who hurt us. Defending the vulnerable. Refusing to join the crowd in condemning a scapegoat.
These actions require more than choosing a political side. They require a transformed heart.
Politics can become like lunchroom drama—rival tables, popularity contests, whispered accusations, and arguments over who belongs. But the Gospel invites us to ask a deeper question:
Who have we left sitting alone?
Jesus moved toward the people others pushed away. He welcomed the outcast, showed mercy to sinners, and taught His followers to love beyond the boundaries of their own group.
That is a vision of progress measured not by power or popularity, but by restored lives.
Calling ourselves Christian does not automatically mean we embody the way of Christ. Our actions must give our words meaning. Feeding a hungry neighbor, visiting someone in prison, forgiving an enemy, or listening to someone we have dismissed can move us closer to the life Jesus teaches us to live.
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.” — Matthew 5:9
Being progressive, in the truest sense, means growing in mercy, courage, truthfulness, and love. It means allowing Christ to challenge our pride—including the pride that tells us our own crowd always has the answers.
There is room for disagreement. But we should ask whether our conduct brings healing to the people around us.
Can we disagree without humiliating one another? Can we seek justice without enjoying someone else’s downfall? Can we recognize a neighbor before we recognize an opponent?
These questions go beyond labels. They bring faith home, where it becomes something we practice.

What would progress look like if we measured it by how faithfully we love?
