The Secret to Conflict Resolution | Shannon Pearson
Background
Shannon Pearson is a workplace conflict resolution specialist and mediator. She began her career as an investment advisor, but she saw that even the best systems fail when people aren’t engaged and working toward the same goal. After years of avoiding conflict herself, she learned how much unresolved problems really cost. She turned that lesson into a career helping people and organizations face hard conversations. In this TEDxSurrey talk, she uses a dodgeball analogy and the story of a grieving employee to show that conflict often grows from hurts and values nobody has said out loud. She argues that resolving it takes courage and humility.
Through a Christian Lens
Most of us dodge conflict and call it keeping the peace. Scripture draws a different line between peacekeeping and peacemaking. Avoiding a hard conversation can feel kind, but it often leaves the wound to fester. Jesus didn’t tell us to steer around our brother. He told us to go to him.
Shannon’s point that conflict usually hides an unspoken vulnerability is something every believer should take to heart. Behind the sharp word or the cold shoulder there is often grief, fear, or a feeling of not being valued. When we drop our assumptions and really listen, we start to see the other person the way God sees them: not as an opponent, but as someone carrying a burden.
The courage and humility she describes are the same things the gospel asks of us. It takes courage to step toward the tension, and humility to admit we may not have the whole story. Approached that way, conflict can become a bridge instead of a wall.
“Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.” (Matthew 5:9)
