The Distance — CAKE

Some songs remind you of a year. Some remind you of a place. This one reminds me of her.

Last year, I saw CAKE in concert with a close friend. Now, whenever “The Distance” comes on, that shared experience comes back with it. Music has a way of keeping a little piece of our lives ready for us, waiting behind the opening notes.

You can hear a song a hundred times, then hear it with one particular person, and suddenly it belongs to a memory.

That is what this song has become for me.

I love the way CAKE sounds like CAKE. That unmistakable rhythm, the dry delivery, the strange little combination of grit and humor. There is something wonderfully stubborn about this music. It keeps moving, and it makes you want to move with it.

Today, though, I am thinking less about the race and more about the company.

Who was beside you when the music started? Who helped turn an ordinary date on the calendar into something you would remember a year later?

For me, this song carries the memory of a close friend and a concert we shared. I am grateful for that. A good memory deserves a place on the playlist.

There is no need to explain every detail for a song to mean something. Sometimes you just turn it up, smile, and let yourself remember.

That is part of why I love sharing music here at WeRockTV. Behind every selection, there might be a friendship, a season, a thank you, or a story that only two people fully understand.

This one is a quiet dedication to the friend who shared that concert with me last year.

Thank you for being part of a memory that still has a soundtrack.

Wherever this song finds you today, I hope it brings someone good to mind. Let the music play, and give that memory a moment.
