Did Bastiat Know Squat?

This was one of the first videos we ever uploaded to promote classical liberalism and free markets in America. Looking back, it brings me right back to the reason we started: ideas matter, liberty matters, and ordinary people deserve a place in the conversation.

Did Bastiat know squat? We certainly thought so. Still do.

Frédéric Bastiat carried the spirit of Enlightenment thinking into the nineteenth century, making the case for individual liberty, voluntary exchange, and limits on government power. In our classroom of freedom, he was head of the class.

His gift was making complicated arguments understandable. Economics did not have to belong exclusively to professors, politicians, or people speaking a language nobody else could follow.

Consider his famous broken window lesson. A shattered window creates work for the glazier. But the owner must spend money replacing something instead of buying something else. The repair is visible. The lost opportunity is easier to overlook.

That simple distinction still asks something valuable of us: look beyond the immediate result. Ask who pays, what disappears, and what might have happened otherwise. (bastiat.org)

For us, classical liberalism means protecting room for people to think, speak, create, worship, trade, and build lives through peaceful cooperation. Freedom carries responsibility, including honesty, compassion, and respect for the same rights in our neighbors.

Markets involve imperfect people. So do governments. That is a reason to keep asking questions, examining incentives, and resisting special privileges for the powerful.

WeRockTV began sharing these ideas because we believed America could benefit from a deeper conversation about liberty. That conversation remains worth having, with humility, humor, and a willingness to listen.

You do not have to agree with every conclusion to appreciate a thinker who challenges you to see what you missed.

Good news. Good music. Good works.

Liberty and justice for all means keeping the door open for everyone.

Yes, that includes you.
