Some songs arrive exactly when we need them. Pearl Jam’s “Given to Fly” is one of those songs. It tells of a wounded traveler who discovers wings, then returns to share love with a world that still knows how to wound. Today, after writing about leaving the cocoon of treatment, I hear something different in it. Freedom is not pretending the pain never happened. It is carrying what we learned into the open air. Recovery needs roots, accountability, and courage. It also needs movement. The point of healing is not to remain sheltered forever, but to become available to others. We were never made to stay grounded by fear. Keep flying.

“But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles.” — Isaiah 40:31 (KJV)
