“Hush” — Mark Kimbrell with Another Roadside Attraction

Here’s Mark Kimbrell playing “Hush” with Roadside—a moment from our musical history featuring a guitarist whose roots run deep in Birmingham music.

Mark’s musical world spans jazz, rock, blues, funk, and improvisation. His connection to Alabama’s music community is also a family story, passed from one generation of performers to another. (reverbnation.com)

His father, Henry Kimbrell, was a jazz pianist, bandleader, television personality, and Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame member. Henry brought Mark and his brother Matt into his working band while they were teenagers, giving them experience playing jazz together at local clubs. Music was part of their home life and their working education. (edreynolds1995.com)

Matt Kimbrell became a familiar presence in Birmingham as a drummer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. His bands included Jim Bob and the Leisure Suits, Mambo Combo, and the Tim Boykin Blues Band. He also taught percussion, helping carry that musical knowledge into another generation. Matt died in 2010, leaving a substantial place in Birmingham’s musical memory. (dignitymemorial.com)

Together, the Kimbrell family’s story connects Birmingham’s jazz tradition with its adventurous club and original music scenes. Their influence grew through performances, collaborations, teaching, and the everyday work of making music with other people.

For me, this clip brings that history back to something personal: Mark sharing a stage with Another Roadside Attraction.

These recordings matter because they preserve the people behind the music. A name becomes a face. A memory becomes something we can share. Someone discovering this today gets a chance to encounter a musician who belongs in the story of Alabama music.

That is part of what I want WeRockTV to do: give our musicians their flowers, preserve these moments, and introduce their work to people who may have missed it the first time.

Mark, thank you for being part of our story.

This one is for you, for Henry and Matt, and for everyone keeping Alabama’s musical heritage alive, one performance and one shared memory at a time.
