Rare Earth: I Just Want to Celebrate—Another Day of Grace
Background
Rare Earth was a Detroit rock band signed to Motown, which named a whole label after them. Released in 1971 and written by Dino Fekaris and Nick Zesses, “I Just Want to Celebrate” became one of the band’s biggest hits, climbing into the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and finding new life in films, commercials, and ballparks ever since.
Through a Christian Lens
Some songs make you tap your foot. This one practically asks your whole body to file a motion against despair.
Rare Earth’s “I Just Want to Celebrate” comes charging through the speakers with a joy that feels wonderfully stubborn. Listen through a Christian lens, and it becomes an invitation to count the gifts still standing when life has knocked a few things over.
Start with breath. You woke up. There is another morning, another opportunity to love somebody, another chance to ask forgiveness and begin again.
That is worth celebrating.
Christian joy can hold sorrow without pretending it has disappeared. Jesus wept. The Psalms make room for anguish, confusion, and questions that do not resolve before bedtime. Faith gives us somewhere to bring those things.
It also teaches us to notice mercy.
Paul’s call to rejoice and give thanks in 1 Thessalonians 5:16–18 can be difficult to practice on an ordinary rough afternoon. Gratitude may begin with something small enough to overlook: a friend answering the phone, food on the table, sunlight through the window, or music that gets us moving again.
We can receive those moments as gifts.
Heard this way, Rare Earth’s celebration offers a useful reminder: our troubles do not deserve every available inch of our attention. There is still goodness to recognize, still kindness to offer, still life asking us to participate.
And sometimes participation starts with turning up the volume.
You do not need a spotless record or a perfectly arranged future to thank God for today. Grace meets people in unfinished lives. Most of us would have no other place to meet it.
At WeRockTV, we believe good music can open a window when a room has grown stuffy with worry.
So let this one play.
Thank the Lord for the breath in your lungs and the people you can love today. Reach out to somebody who could use a little joy.
Let gratitude become something you do.
Another day is here.
Receive it with thanks.
“This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.”
Psalm 118:24 (KJV)
