GOOD MUSIC | MARK LANTER: WON’T GET FOOLED AGAIN

Some songs call for a drummer. “Won’t Get Fooled Again” calls for somebody willing to climb into the engine room and keep the whole machine moving.

Today’s WeRockTV spotlight belongs to Mark Lanter, playing drums on this mighty Who classic. Mark is part of my own musical story, so sharing this carries a little extra meaning. There is something special about putting a friend’s music in front of people and saying, “Take a minute. Listen to this guy.”

A song like this brings up a question every musician understands: How do you honor something people already love while bringing yourself to it? You listen. You practice. You leave your ego at the door, then show up with something honest to give.

That applies well beyond a drum kit.

The title carries its own invitation, too. We have all believed something that disappointed us, followed the wrong voice, or learned a lesson the expensive way. Getting older does not guarantee wisdom. Paying attention helps. So does admitting when we missed the beat.

As a Christian, I hear a reminder to seek discernment without letting disappointment harden my heart. Jesus tells us to be “wise as serpents and harmless as doves.” — Matthew 10:16.

Stay awake. Keep your kindness. Let experience teach you something besides suspicion.

And keep making music.

Today, I’m grateful for Mark, for the musicians who have crossed my path, and for the way a familiar song can bring us back together. Behind every performance is time somebody spent learning, listening, and starting over. That deserves our attention.

Give this one a listen, share it with a friend who loves drums, and leave Mark some encouragement. Musicians need audiences who show up, too. Turn a passing scroll into a few minutes of listening. That is one small way we keep a musical community alive and growing together.

Good news. Good music. Good works.
