Meet Jefferson County Sheriff Mark Pettway
What does it mean to be a leader guided by faith?
Sheriff Mark Levie Pettway’s official biography describes him as a devoted man of faith, husband, father, and lifelong Jefferson County resident.
With more than three decades of law enforcement experience, Pettway made history in 2018 as Jefferson County’s first elected African American sheriff.
His career also reflects an emphasis on mental health, addiction treatment, education, and community outreach.
Among the initiatives highlighted by the Sheriff’s Office are expanded mental health resources in county jails and the Books Not Bullets program, which places books into the hands of children.
As Christians, we can reflect on what Scripture teaches about public service:
“Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.” — Matthew 5:9
Faith, compassion, justice, humility, and accountability are important principles for anyone entrusted with public authority.
May we pray for Sheriff Pettway, his deputies, and every public servant responsible for protecting our communities.
“To do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God.” — Micah 6:8
