“Drift Away” — Dobie Gray

In memory of Eugene Moore “Moe” Davis.

I met Moe at my first recovery meeting, and we became instant friends. He would be my sponsor for ten years. Today, remembering him, I keep coming back to that beginning: walking into a room and finding someone who would become such a lasting part of my life.

His given name was Eugene Moore. The nickname came from his nanny, who once called him “lil Moe Davis.” Moe became the name I knew, and the friend I loved.

We shared a love of motorcycles. There is something about that connection: the road, the ride, and having someone who understands why you love it. Motorcycles were one more piece of the friendship we shared beyond the meetings.

Once, we traveled to Eagle Rock for a recovery seminar. That trip belongs among the memories I carry of him. Recovery brought us together, but over ten years, he became part of my story in ways a single word like “sponsor” cannot fully hold.

Moe also loved The Urantia Book. I’m including a link for anyone who wants to explore something that mattered to him. Remembering a friend includes remembering the things that stirred his curiosity and held his attention.

He was friends with Dobie Gray, which makes “Drift Away” feel especially personal today. Music already has a way of carrying people back into the room. This song gives me a place to remember Moe.

I lost him while I was in jail. Being unable to be there adds another ache to saying goodbye.

But I can honor him here.

Moe, thank you for ten years of sponsorship, for becoming my friend at that first meeting, and for the memories that remain. When I hear this song, I’ll think of you, our shared love of motorcycles, and that trip to Eagle Rock.

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” — Matthew 5:4

Memory eternal, my friend. May you rest in peace, held in God’s love.

With love,
Jase
