🐜🎶 ANTS MARCHING — AND THE JAR WE LIVE IN
There’s a familiar story about red ants and black ants placed together in a jar. In the story, they coexist until someone shakes it. Then they turn on each other, mistaking their neighbors for the source of the chaos.
It’s a parable, not a verified scientific experiment. Real ants may fight without anyone shaking the jar. But the story offers a useful reminder about how quickly fear can become blame. (factcheck.afp.com)
It also brings to mind “Ants Marching” by Dave Matthews Band, featured on their 1994 album Under the Table and Dreaming. (shop.davematthewsband.com)
To my ears, that song holds up a mirror to our daily routines: waking up, working, rushing around, leaving things unsaid, and doing it all again tomorrow. The music moves with incredible life, while the story makes me wonder how much living we miss on autopilot.
The song and the ant parable give me two questions:
Am I paying attention to the life I’m living?
Am I directing my frustration at someone before understanding what happened?
Sometimes people stir up division. Sometimes we misunderstand each other. Sometimes we contribute to the very chaos we wish would stop.
We can pause. Check the facts. Have the conversation. Refuse to pass our pain along.
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.” — Matthew 5:9
Turn up the music. Step out of the routine. Make room for each other.
