Some drummers keep the beat. Others become the beat. And then there’s Kelly Simpson, Birmingham’s very own cymbal-diving drummer extraordinaire, a madman who swims with the seals and brings light into all our lives.
Kelly is one of those unforgettable characters who makes a music scene more than just a collection of bands. He makes it a community.
From his days playing with The Generic Band to a handful of gigs with Another Roadside Attraction (Roadside), and countless musical adventures with other bands along the way, Kelly has been part of the fabric of Birmingham’s music scene for years.
And what a character!
There’s something wonderfully unpredictable about a drummer who approaches life with the same enthusiasm he brings to a drum kit. Cymbals crash, sticks fly, and somewhere in the middle of the beautiful madness, Kelly reminds us why we fell in love with rock and roll in the first place.
But the real magic isn’t just in the music. It’s in the man.
Kelly possesses that rare ability to brighten a room simply by being himself. His humor, energy, friendship, and unmistakable spirit are reminders that some of the greatest contributions musicians make happen long after the final encore.
Bands come and go. Stages change. Songs fade from the setlist. But the people who make the journey unforgettable stay with us.
Kelly Simpson is one of those people.
So here’s to Birmingham’s cymbal-diving madman, the drummer extraordinaire who swims with the seals and keeps marching to his own gloriously unconventional beat.
Keep crashing those cymbals, Kelly. Keep spreading the joy. And above all, keep shining your light.
“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.” — Matthew 5:14 (KJV)
