The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down — The Band

Written by Robbie Robertson and sung by Arkansas-born drummer Levon Helm, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down first appeared on The Band’s 1969 self-titled album. It is told by Virgil Caine, a poor Southerner at the end of the Civil War who has lost his home, his livelihood, and his brother. This performance comes from The Last Waltz.

Seen through a Christian lens, this is a song of grief and humbling. Virgil isn’t a general or a hero. He’s an ordinary man who has lost nearly everything and has to keep going. Defeat strips away pride and leaves us with what’s real. When the old world falls, God remains, and He is near to the broken.

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Psalm 34:18
