Kayfabe is a term from professional wrestling describing the maintenance of a staged fiction — rivalries, heroes and villains, conflict and outcomes all performed as if they are real, even when many people suspect the structure is coordinated.
The Hegelian dialectic describes how ideas and history evolve through conflict: a thesis meets its antithesis, they clash, and a synthesis emerges, which then becomes the new thesis and the cycle repeats.
The connection is how political and cultural systems often resemble a kind of kayfabe dialectic — opposing sides presented as enemies in public conflict, while the resulting synthesis trends toward more centralized control, managed narratives, and predictable outcomes.
The Left/Right divide can function like this spectacle: shifting roles, repeated conflict, audience participation through allegiance, and institutional power remaining largely unchanged regardless of which side “wins.”
This also maps onto Girard’s theory of mimetic rivalry, where opposing forces mirror each other, conflict escalates through imitation, and the system stabilizes by transferring tension onto a scapegoat, often the public itself, while the underlying structure remains intact.
