Proudest Monkey — Dave Matthews Band

Proudest Monkey comes from Dave Matthews Band’s 1996 album Crash. It’s a slow, jazzy song featuring LeRoi Moore’s saxophone, and in concert it often flows straight into Satellite.

Seen through a Christian lens, Proudest Monkey is about a monkey who swings down from the trees, proud to walk the city streets like everybody else, and then finds himself just as stuck as before. Pride promises freedom and ends up in a cage. Real freedom comes from humility and from walking with God.

“God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” James 4:6
