The Jericho Mile (1979)

In Michael Mann’s 1979 film, Larry “Rain” Murphy is serving life in Folsom Prison for killing his abusive father. He keeps to himself and runs alone around the prison yard every day, until he clocks a mile fast enough to compete for the Olympics.

Seen through a Christian lens, The Jericho Mile is about finding freedom even behind walls. Rain can’t change his past, but running gives him purpose and dignity. Like the walls of Jericho, the walls around his heart begin to fall. True freedom is not about where you are, but who you are becoming.

“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” John 8:36
