Touch of Grey — Grateful Dead
Some songs meet you right where you are: tired, bruised, still looking for something worth smiling about.
“Touch of Grey” is one of those songs.
There’s a reason that line about a silver lining carrying a touch of grey stays with us. Even the good days have complications. You can be grateful and grieving. Hopeful and uncertain. Making progress and still cleaning up yesterday’s mess.
Sometimes all of that happens before lunch.
What I love about this song is the way it keeps moving. There’s humor in it, a little weariness, and a stubborn willingness to face another day. You can hear the trouble without feeling like trouble gets the final word.
That feels familiar.
As we get older, we discover that happiness can show up in the middle of unfinished business. A friend calls. A song comes on. Somebody makes you laugh when you were certain you had nothing left to laugh about.
The bills are still there. The difficult conversation still needs to happen. But you catch your breath, and suddenly the next step seems possible.
For me, faith belongs right there, in the middle of ordinary life. God meets us with our questions, our regrets, and our imperfect attempts to begin again.
“This is the day the Lord has made; let us greatly rejoice, and be glad therein.” — Psalm 117:24, Orthodox numbering.
Some days, rejoicing comes easily. Other days, it means getting dressed, keeping your word, asking for help, and noticing one good thing you might otherwise have missed.
There’s room for both kinds of days.
This song makes me want to turn the volume up, loosen my shoulders, and remember how much life remains to be lived.
A touch of grey comes with the territory. So do friendship, forgiveness, music, and those unexpected moments when the light breaks through.
Here’s to everyone carrying a little heaviness today.
May you find a reason to smile, someone to walk beside you, and enough hope to take the next step.
