Everybody’s recovering from life in one way or another.

Some of us are recovering from addiction. Others are recovering from grief, divorce, disappointment, anger, loneliness, or the exhausting habit of pretending everything is fine.

Some are just recovering from trying to assemble furniture with instructions that apparently were written by a confused squirrel.

Different stories. Different struggles. The same need for grace.

One thing I am learning is that we all have areas that need work. Every one of us. You can have money, education, a beautiful house, and a calendar full of appointments and still need somebody to sit beside you and ask, “How are you really doing?”

And then actually listen.

My time at Montgomery Behavioral Health and Longleaf has helped me appreciate the value of people helping people. Sometimes the person who understands you best is someone whose life looks nothing like yours, but who recognizes the weight you are carrying.

Healing can begin with that recognition.

We need people who encourage us, people who tell us the truth with love, and people who remind us that a difficult chapter does not have to become our whole identity.

We also need the humility to accept their help.

That part can be uncomfortable. I would generally prefer God send instructions confirming that I already know everything. So far, He seems committed to a different curriculum.

“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” — Galatians 6:2

That is something we can practice today: make the call, offer the ride, listen without preparing a lecture, or admit that we could use some company ourselves.

You do not have to solve somebody’s whole life to make their day a little easier.

And you do not have to have your whole life together to offer kindness.

Sometimes we carry. Sometimes we get carried.

Either way, we belong to one another.

There is hope here.

What has helped you keep going when life got heavy?
