Tangled Up in Blue
Some songs feel like a long road you have walked yourself. “Tangled Up in Blue” is one of them. Bob Dylan wrote it, and Jerry Garcia Band made it a live journey, stretching it past twelve minutes of patient, soulful guitar.
Jerry’s playing never hurries. Every note seems to say, take your time, the story is still unfolding. When I listen, I think about my own winding path: the detours, the wrong turns, the people who found me along the way, and the grace that kept me moving.
Scripture speaks to every winding road:
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” — Proverbs 3:5-6
As a dad, I have learned that life rarely goes in a straight line. Plans unravel. Seasons change. Some days feel tangled beyond repair. Yet a good song, like a good prayer, reminds me that the knots are not the end of the story.
“He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.” — Psalm 23:3
I am grateful for the music that keeps me company through those tangled seasons. I am grateful for my daughters, who make every detour worth taking. And I am grateful for a God who patiently untangles what I cannot.
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” — Romans 8:28
My own little verse:
Tangled threads and a winding road,
A slow guitar to share the load,
Every knot in His loving hand
Becomes a path I understand.
So here is to winding roads, slow guitars, and gentle endings. Take the long way home today. Listen closely, give thanks often, and trust that you are being led even when the path looks tangled. What song untangles your heart? Tell me in the comments.
